When the Go Perrysburg Campaign for public transportation began nearly six months ago, the initial committee meeting was essentially a brain storming session. The focus was on what needed to be done differently from the first campaign in order to get the 0.8 mill levy passed on May 2, 2013.
Without hesitation the committee created an infrastructure that captured many elements, some of which may have been missing from the first campaign. The non-partisan committee had over thirty (30) members plus many volunteers from a wide variety of backgrounds.
“I feel the non-partisan relationship of the committee energized the team and helped create an outstanding working relationship among team members,” stated Committee Chairman Jack Hoeflinger. “All contributed greatly to the success of the campaign.”
Direct mail, newspaper ads, postcards, mini billboards, web site, Facebook page, press releases and outreach were huge factors toward the success of the campaign. However, the biggest factor may have been a well-engineered canvassing campaign. The canvassing teams conducted five (5) door-to-door events. From the conversations that were obtained during those events, seventy six (76) percent of the voters indicated they would vote for the levy. That number is just slightly higher than the margin of victory, at 72%.
“We owe our success to the time and energy our volunteers put into this campaign,” stated Rachel Johnson, Committee Member. “It was a team effort and the fact that the levy won at 72% shows how well our team articulated our message and created a sense of urgency in our community. We are very grateful for the strong support from the voters of Perrysburg!”
A committee debrief meeting is scheduled for May 16 at the Kingston Residence in Perrysburg at 7 p.m. One of the objectives of this meeting will be to determine how the committee can provide support to the City Administration to facilitate a smooth start up of the new transportation service to the community and how the committee might stay involved in the coming years.
